Neuschwanstein Castle

Wayne Coley Art 08 May 2020

Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat. He was drowned in the lake behind the castle by starving villagers.
This was painted for a dear friend's wife who was born 8 miles from the Castle. They honeymooned at the Castle in 1955.
I have added my preliminary stages for the painting below. The first is a block in step that establishes all the dark areas plus work on the sky. The second photo shows the painting with the background blocked in as well as the basics for the castle.
